Talks arranged by the society

Please note that the society has the use of St Mary’s hall from 2.30 to 4.30 on Thursdays, & from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays, to allow for setting up and clearing away. Early attendance by members is appreciated to enable to allow the talks to start promptly at 3pm or 7.30pm. The hall has step-free access and a large adjacent car park, with bus stops nearby on Church Road. Complimentary refreshments will be served at the afternoon talks from 2.30pm.

Membership forms, if required, are available via the website. If you have any suggestions for speakers, or would be willing to speak on a topic of interest yourself, please contact us by emailing info@wooltonsociety.org.uk

  As usual the talks in February, March & October will be held on Thursday afternoons, starting at 3pm, so avoiding the dark evenings.

The talks in April, May & September, the Quiz Night in June & the AGM in November will be on Wednesdays starting at 7.30pm.

Thursday 19h February at 3pm, Ken Pye: The Bloody History of Liverpool
You will find out about the grim goings in inside the Castle of Liverpool, the civil war and the ruthless massacre of the Liverpool townsfolk.

Thursday 19th March at 3pm, Bernard Nevin: Margery Booth, the knickers spy who sang for Hitler Margery Booth is a forgotten English Opera star form the 1930's but also acted as an undercover wartime spy. She rose to fame when she came to the attention of Adolf Hitler while she was singing at the Berlin Opera house.


Wednesday 15th April at 7.30pm,John Coventry: Searching for the Holy Grail The Holy Grail...the most sort after artefact in history, the most elusive relic of Christendom? What was it? Does it exist? Has it been found?


Wednesday 20th May at 7.30pm, Lois Murray: The History of Public Health in Liverpool. Liverpool has always been a forerunner in Public Health. Lois will tell us of the history and the current Public health system.

Wednesday 16th September at 7.30pm, Alisair Baker: From the Archives of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
We welcome back Alistair and Dave for the CWGC. From the archives tells the stories of the people who gave their lives during conflicts and are now remembered by the CWGC.

Thursday 15th October at 3pm, Prof Bryn Evans : The Hidden History of the British Restaurant
Prof Evans is Professor of History at Hope University and a world authority on the history of food. His talk covers a lot of the work of Lord Woolton during the Second World War.

Wednesday 19th November at 7.30 pm: the fifty third annual general meeting.
All society members are invited to the AGM. There will be refreshments after the business of the evening is concluded.
Members of the society are also entitled to attend talks given by the Merseyside Civic Society.
